Community Dialysis Units
Providence Health Care operates seven community dialysis units across Vancouver and the Coastal regions in partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. These units are located in Vancouver, East Vancouver, North Shore, Powell River (qathet Community Dialysis Unit), Richmond, Sechelt and Squamish.
Community dialysis units provide hemodialysis services to patients closer to home and help minimize travel time. Each unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary team including nephrologists, nurses, biomedical engineering technologists, pharmacists, dietitians, social workers and administrative/program staff.
Patients who are medically suitable for community hemodialysis are referred by the Renal Program at either St. Paul's Hospital or Vancouver General Hospital. Considerations include the patient’s health status and stability on dialysis, patient mobility and transportation, and unit capacity.
Most patient need hemodialysis three times a week for four hours each session. Some patients require more frequent treatment.
