Visitor Hemodialysis Program

The Visitor Dialysis Program provides dialysis treatment to traveling dialysis patients. Our inter-professional team includes registered nurses, renal technicians, nephrologists, nurse practitioners, registered dietitians and social workers. We are a teaching hospital and care providers may include learners from all disciplines in various stages of their program of study.

Traveling dialysis patients can visit the Dialysis Unit at St. Paul’s Hospital to receive dialysis services in downtown Vancouver.

This service is available to British Columbians, out-of-province visitors and international travelers. Patients will be considered for visitor’s dialysis if they meet the following criteria:

  • They are deemed fit for travel by their home unit;
  • They have provided all medical information requested by our program;
  • Our team has reviewed the patient’s medical information and confirmed that we can meet their hemodialysis needs.

Accessing this service

Visitor services are offered according to unit capacity.  Travelers requiring hemodialysis services during their stay in Vancouver are required to book this service 30 days in advance, for the summer months 60 days in advance.  For visitors within Canada, treatment is covered or partly covered under Provincial medical plans of the Province in which they reside.  For International visitors, please contact the Visitor Dialysis Program directly for pricing.

There is an information package that we fax to your current dialysis unit requesting the necessary medical information.  The medical information is reviewed by a physician to determine if you are medically suitable to have treatment here.  All treatment bookings are tentative until approved by our physician. The completed package must be returned to us no later than 4 weeks prior to the date of your first treatment with us.
